The Western medicine Tamiflu, which is used
to combat avian influenza, contains refined star anise ingredients, making
traditional Chinese medicine star anise a topic of discussion in the current
fight against avian influenza. Traditional Chinese medicine experts here
believe that the traditional Chinese medicine star anise not only cannot
directly treat avian influenza, but on the contrary, using star anise to fight
avian influenza is like adding fuel to the fire, because star anise is warm-hot
natured, while influenza happens to belong to heat symptom-complex.
Professor Zhong Jiaxi, an expert on epidemic
febrile diseases and director of the Teaching and Research Department of Warm
Diseases at Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said in an
interview with reporters today that traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes
dialectical treatment. The traditional Chinese medicine star anise belongs to
the warm and hot nature, while bird flu belongs to the warm and hot type. Both
are of the same type, and using star anise to fight influenza is like adding
oil to a fire.
Lu Shijie, the director of the Shamian
Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum and a veteran Chinese medicine
practitioner, told reporters that the symptoms of influenza are high fever and
bone pain, which are referred to as fever in traditional Chinese medicine and
belong to the category of warm fever. Traditional Chinese medicine believes
that heat causes coldness, while cold causes heat. Influenza is manifested as a
fever and requires cold medicine. Star anise is a warm food, and warm heat is
not suitable for hot and warm diseases. Lu Shijie said that star anise is
mainly a health food and does not directly affect influenza. However, in a
combination of medicines, star anise can act as one of the complementary drugs,
but it is not fundamental. Using only one traditional Chinese medicine, star
anise, to fight influenza is obviously not effective. Lu Shijie stated that in
the past 40 years of working in traditional Chinese medicine, he has never
prescribed octagonal Chinese medicine to patients. Currently, even hospital
pharmacies do not have octagonal Chinese medicine, which can only be purchased
at grocery stores
